This morning I took my first ever polygraph. No, I am not on trial or being investigated. As some of you already know, I am in the hiring process of becoming a confinement officer at the county jail. I got a call last Friday that I was next up on the list to continue on with the process. Previously I was put on an eligibility list for this position. It turns out people ahead of me on the list failed their polygraph, so now it is my turn to step up to the plate.
I didn’t really know what to expect when I got there. All the information I have about how a polygraph is conducted is from television and movies. This polygraph was hooked to a laptop. They put a blood pressure cuff on my arm, a couple of detectors on my fingertips, and two cords, one each around my chest and a bit lower near the stomach. We went over plenty of background information before taking the test. The actual test needed yes or no answers based on previous topics that were already discussed. e.g. “No, I did not lie about that previously discussed topic.”
During the test the officer had me close my eyes. Honestly I had no problem answering all the questions. I just hope my nervous behavior going on inside of my mind had any effect on it. I should get the results back shortly. The officer that gave me the test has to review the results which go directly to the sheriff. The sheriff then passes that on to the jail personal director who then calls me. I know they want to get the ball rolling on getting more people hired, so hopefully I will be able to hear from the department before the weekend.
The next step would be a physical and probably more paperwork for the final stages. Hopefully that phone will be ringing soon!
