This week I got trained at an outdoor mall. The first two hours I was scheduled to drive a company vehicle around the property and the rest of the night I was on walking patrol. While walking around on the property, I have to press these buttons that are scattered throughout the mall. The buttons are magnetic and this magnetic tool I carry around stores the location and time I hit the button. This lets the property owner know that I am walking around and securing the area.
While on walking patrol, it started raining out. While it was raining, there was this guy walking through the mall. Normally, you don’t see a guy walking around in the rain at 3:30 in the morning. I approached him and told him that the mall was closed and he would have to come back the next day when it was open. He asked where he was. I thought he was being sarcastic and trying to say he was on public property and was allowed to be there, but he honestly did not know where he was. He explained that he has glaucoma in his eye and he could not see very well. He stated he got into a fight with his girlfriend and just left her house and started walking. With no sunlight, rain and apparently glaucoma, he walked from a nearby street. He asked for a cab or a ride home. He just seemed very disoriented. He was not drunk, just acting a bit weird.
I called this in and the supervisor dispatched city police out there. They show up with three cops including a K9 unit. They ran his information and escorted him home.
Just a little incident I thought I would write about. Stay tuned for more security officer stories as they come to me!
