I’ve been on the job for three nights now, and I really love it! So far I have been trained at an apartment complex and this Thursday will be learning how to patrol a car lot. At the complex, my job is to make sure that all of the buildings such as the maintenance building, clubhouse and main office are locked up at night. I also have to do foot and motorized patrols every hour. The rest of the time I am sitting watching and listening for any disturbances. We use radios to communicate and use the city’s signal codes for radio traffic.
I really enjoy doing this kind of work. This is a full-time position, so I work five nights every week. Last night, Saturday, was the busiest night thus far. Lots of cars in and out of the complex. This community is mainly younger people, probably 25 being the average age, so there are people coming home late from the bars on the weekend. I had three different city cops on the property last night. One of them got a disturbance call of people in the parking lot. There were about ten teens in the parking lot, just talking, so I didn’t seem any harm. They left about five minutes prior to city showing up. Another cop came through and patrolled the area. And the last one near the end of my shift stopped and entered a building. I called it out on the radio, and then when he came back to his car, I went up to him to ask about any issues I needed to be aware of. He said he was just looking for someone who apparently didn’t live there anymore. I love exciting nights like that. I want to be the one to catch someone doing the wrong thing and making them pay the price.
This will be a great job for me while I am in school. I plan to stay with this security company for a while until I finish school and earn my degree. Then, I will have enough experience, AND education to start applying to the bigger jobs. I have got a plan in place and I will definitely follow through with it!
