I am always thinking about what I am going to do for my career. Once I get my degree and I am out of college, what are the steps I am going to take to start my career? I’m hoping to have something lined up even before I am out of college.
I know I want to be a federal agent of some sort. A field agent in a particular area. I want something that does not require me to be away from home weeks at a time. I want something I can do in a local area and be able to come home every night. I was considering the FBI as an option. I am not sure what kind of work schedule FBI agents have and how often they have to travel. Also, DEA seemingly would have to travel to different places as well depending on where the action is. I think it would be really cool to work in Washington D.C., our country’s capital.
It looks like there may be some U.S. Secret Service positions open… If you have not heard or read the news, some secret service agents, and possibly some military personnel, were involved in sexual acts with prostitutes in some other country. That is just crazy. The way “professionals” act these days is insane. I believe the secret service travels a lot, so I am not sure I would want to obtain that career. If I have a family during this time, I really would not want to be traveling weeks at a time. That is the only reason why I do not want a big traveling job. I think about some families and how the husbands are out on duty for weeks or months at a time. I can not imagine how hard that must be.
I am still deciding what I really want to do as a career. The U.S. Marshal’s look pretty cool. Busting down doors and serving the most dangerous warrants. I would love to be part of a closely knit team.
There is definitely more exploring to do. I really would like to talk to agency representatives somehow to get a good explanation on what the agency actually does. I know there are plenty of government websites explaining things, but that is not enough for me. In time I will decide what I want to be.
